If you want to Excel

Filed under: Thought of the day — mani @ 2:38 pm

Hope you all had a good weekend.  I had a great weekend.  1 billion people from India were celebrating the victory of Cricket World Cup.   It is a great event in Indian sports history.  When your favorite team wins the cup, the amount of happiness is immense.  I have been looking at a player who surpassed most of world records in Cricket.   I was looking up, What makes the person master or excel  in any field.

We could take any field for discussion sports, music or medicine.

The nature of expertise is revealed in the form of learners ,  mediocre, OK,  good, and excellent.

Anders Ericsson is professor of Psychology.  Per Anders Ericsson, “With exception of some sports, no characteristics of the brain or body constrains an individual from reaching an expert level.”   Then the next question would be how one individual could become a master in particular field.

Deliberate practice is Ericsson’s his big idea.  It entails considerable, specific and sustained efforts to do something you can’t do well.  It demands high concentration, and much reflection and feedback analysis.

My message here is, We all have to register one thing in our mind, “experts are always made, not born”.
